How do chemical drain cleaners work?
There are four common groups of chemical drain cleaners being caustic treatments, acid treatments, herbicides and biological treatments. Which cleaner you should use depends on your blockage.
Caustic treatments turn oils into soap, this is then soluble and can be flushed away. They are effective on blockages caused by cooking fats and body oils.
Acidic drain cleaners exchange ions with the blockage, produce heat and break them down. They are effective on organic matter including skin, hair and body oils.
Both caustic and acidic drain cleaners won’t do a thing for blockages that involve tree roots.
Herbicidal treatments such as Rootx or Vaporoot is a Metham Sodium and Dichlobenil foaming treatment. After a high-pressure water jet to clear your drain, these treatments kill the cut tree roots on contact. These treatments are non-systemic, don’t kill the tree and are designed to slow down root regrowth. They do not work on any other type of blockage.
Biological treatments are bacteria and enzymes suspended in a carrier. They work by multiplying and slowly digest organic matter, fats, toilet paper and oil. This approach is gentle, environmentally friendly and natural.
It is worth mentioning that enzymic treatments aren’t compatible with acidic and basic drain cleaning treatments.
Do chemical drain cleaners from a hardware store work?
Most publically available drain cleaning treatments are watered down to make them safe for the public. Plumbers can access trade only chemicals which are stronger, effective and require considerable care.
Biological treatments are great for oily blockages but can take a long time to act.
We don’t recommend using any chemical drain cleaners by themselves. The reason is that most drain chemicals will cause damage if they are left in a blocked sewer system.
If you have used a hardware store drain-cleaner or household chemicals to unblock your drains, please let us know. We will need to wear additional personal protective equipment and take extra precautions.

Got a call back quickly which was nice, asked to describe problem. Already did that online. Missed "courtesy" calls as phone on silent, they were trying to confirm I'm around. Thus job was delayed til later today. I was already told 9am so yes I am around. Andrew and Adam from Omega Plumbing and Home Services did an excellent job in renewing my Sewerage and complete drainage system of my old home in Winston Hills. Matt and Jarred initially did the investigation and provided very courteous and professional service. A mixed review. Very happy with initial response and quote. Was told two workers would be back to drain and remove old water heater. Ben arrived on his own. He was polite and efficient but it was not fair on him or us as my husband had to help him remove the heater which was... extremely heavy and awkward. The heater would not have been removed if my husband hadn't helped. We did pay for this so shouldn't have had to help. On a brighter note, both William and Jarden arrived to install the new heater. My parents have had a few jobs completed by Omega over the years. They always rave about the staff & the great tradies they have. My husband decided to give them a go recently for a plumbing issue we had. He called, they came out the same day & gave us a price to complete the... repair. First Adam arrived promptly and strongly encouraged me to watch him jet the sewer line so I could understand any problems as to why sewerage overflowed outside and my house flooded with bath water. Understandably I was extremely anxious and upset with houseful of guests and... toilets not working properly and the prospect of major work to pipes. From the moment I called Omega Home Services, Ryan was the first to come out, our water heater was leaking. Of course it has to be replaced. Being the long weekend, Ryan left his number in case water heater broke down further, and Ryan said Omega would put in a temporary water... heater, well the heater broke down that same afternoon a temporary heater was installed.The service was prompt and efficient. Nelson from Omega Services came and installed a brand new hot water system for us last week. The water heater delivered the first time was found to be faulty. Nelson and his colleague immediately got in touch with the company and quickly arranged for its replacement. The new one... was delivered right next day. In the meantime, to make sure that we did not have to suffer a 24-hour waiting period without hot water running in the house during winter time, Nelson and his colleague installed us a temporary hot-water system. Then, Nelson returned the next day and installed the new system for us straight away, and also gave us some good tips on how to use and maintain the new system.
