Why collect rain water?
Water is a very precious resource.
Increasing water restrictions mean there are limits on using mains drinking water to wash cars, fill pools and water your garden. Preparing for water shortages by installing a modest rainwater tank means you will be able to continue your lifestyle regardless of the weather or current government policy.
Many rural centres like Armidale, Goulburn and Orange are almost perpetually on level 5 water restrictions with day zero (no water) being an imminent threat. Having your own water supply is responsible, practical and great lifestyle insurance.
You should be able to wash your car, fill your pool and water your garden whenever you want.
The best part about using rainwater is that after the initial investment, rainwater harvesting is practically free.
What size water tank do you need?
The size of a tank is based on your budget, space available and your usage, as a rough guide:
- Car washing or watering a small garden: 2,000 L – 3,000 L
- Toilet flushing, clothes washing and small gardens: 3,000 L – 5,000 L
- Topping up pools, toilet flushing, clothes washing and larger gardens: 5,000 L – 20,000 L
It is best to get a technician out to size your tank based on your intended usage.
Rainwater helps plants grow
Avid gardeners know that their plants spring to life after a good rain shower. There are many theories why this is the case, but a lack of chlorine and different PH is probably the most likely reason.
Chlorine is used in Sydney’s drinking water to kill organic life, viruses and bacteria. It is a naturally occurring micro-nutrient, but at higher levels will retard plant growth and health. To cope with chlorine toxicity, many plants accumulate excess chlorine it in their leaves which causes bleaches, curling and other disfigurements.
Depending on weather conditions Sydney’s rainwater has a PH of about 5.5, it dissolved CO2, which makes it slightly acidic. This helps dissolve nutrients in the soil and makes it available to your plants. Sydney’s drinking water is closer to neutral with a PH of around 7 and is carefully managed for total dissolved solids.
Bushfire plan
Strong winds during a bushfire carry embers hundreds of meters ahead of a fire front. This means that even if you are several streets away from any bush area your home is still at risk.
When rural and structural firefighters use hydrants and drinking water to fight fires, the water pressure drops. You don’t want to be the home at the end of the line that burns due to not having any water.
Having a static water supply on your property like a water tank means that firefighters have access to water when needed to protect your home. Consider getting a larger tank in the range of 10,000L – 20,000L with additional fire fittings.
NSW Fire + Rescue and Rural Fire Service use 2-inch fittings and forged Storz 65 fittings for their hose connections. Having these fittings available on your tank make it easy to tap in.
If you are in a bushfire prone area, discuss with your technician about getting an appropriate fire-resistant steel or concrete water tank.
