Switchboard repairs
In a favourable environment and regular maintenance, the estimated life of a standard miniature/moulded circuit breaker (MCB) is around 30 years. In reality, their life can be as much shorter than that.
Current wiring standards mean Residual Current Circuit Breaker with Overload Protection (RCBO) is the new standard in circuit breakers. They are so effective in preventing electrocution that they are now mandated by law with wiring standard AS/NZS 3000:2018.
Though legal in limited repair situations, beware of any electrician that uses MCBs. They are either they are cutting corners, aren’t licenced in NSW or aren’t up to date.
Switchboard upgrades
Your switchboard is the electrical ‘control panel’ of your homes electrical system. Older switchboards were never designed to take the high wattage loads the modern household places on them.
To get more power for air conditioners, cooktops, hot water systems and extensions people added additional wiring, enclosures and circuit breakers. Most people’s switchboard is a risky mashup of analogue meters, smart meters, ceramic fuses, enclosures and unlabelled MCBs.
Upgrading your switchboard is the number one thing you can keep your family safe from electrocution and electrical house fires.
Ceramic fuses and fuse boxes
Ceramic fuses have a distinctive look, the fuse block is about the size of a lighter, white, glossy and holds a single wire or ‘fuse’ which burns apart if overloaded.
Each fuse requires a wire that matches its rating, it isn’t unusual to see fuse blocks with thicker wire, assumedly a past occupant didn’t want to visit the store and used what they had.
Fuses like this are the perfect storm for electrical house fires when loaded.
From an electricians point of view, ceramic fuses still work as designed but offer no protection from electrocution.
It has been decades since this technology met Australian Standards, if you still have ceramic fuses, it is time to upgrade.
Why won’t my circuit breaker reset?
There are a few reasons that a circuit breaker won’t reset, including:
- It wasn’t reset correctly: Some brands of circuit breakers have three positions, on, off and tripped. Due to the short distance, it is pretty easy to get the wrong position, flick the breaker off again and make sure it is all the way on.
- The circuit is still overloaded: If the breaker was overload and all the appliances are still plugged it will trip instantly. Unplug the appliances and try again.
- You have a short circuit: If all your appliances have been unplugged, you probably have bare wires touching somewhere causing a short circuit. You want to get an electrician to look at this ASAP.
- Your circuit breaker has failed: Circuit breakers are spring-loaded safety item for your house and family. With age, they start tripping during normal use and need to be replaced.
