Choosing the right fan
Location: The most important consideration is where you want the fan to be installed, this will determine the size, function and fan style.
Light: Fans with inbuilt lights work better in smaller spaces like bedrooms and studies. In lounge rooms where you have other light sources like LED Downlights, combo light fans generally aren’t used. With standard ceiling heights, the light is lower and changes the room’s ambiance in an unflattering way.
Fan Size: Pick a blade size that suits the room; too small and it will lack coverage, too big and it will be out of proportion.
Style: The design of your fan is up to your personal taste. However, consider timber blades in the bedroom as they are generally quieter. Metal and ABS blades move more air, are more durable and better suited to high traffic areas.
What size fan do you need?
Each fan has its own performance characteristics based but as a rough guide:
- Bedrooms 7 – 13 sqm, blade size: 900 mm – 1000 mm
- Smaller lounge rooms 13 – 20 sqm, blade size: 1000 mm – 1120 mm
- Larger lounge rooms 20 – 27 sqm, blade size: 1120 mm – 1370 mm
- Open plan areas 27 – 34 sqm, blade size: 1370 mm – 1520 mm
Large spaces benefit from multiple fans to assist with even air movement.
AC or DC fans?
AC or DC refers to whether a fan uses a transformer to power the motor.
AC fans are commonly used when consistent and even airflow is required over a long period of time. DC fans tend to be quieter and are preferred in bedrooms.
DC fans are more efficient and tend to be more expensive to purchase. A 75W 1320mm AC fan uses around $60 worth of electricity (at 0.275 per kWh) if run 16 hours a day over summer. In comparison, you could run a 19W 1320mm DC fan in the same scenario for 8.4 cents a day.
When compared to most household appliances, especially air conditioners they are low consumption and are cheap to run. So once you have worked out your location, lighting requirements, size and style you can be confident in going with an AC or DC fan.
