How long do power surges last?
Most power surges attacks are extremely fast and only last milliseconds. Power surges are caused by lightning strikes, grid failures and power generation cross overs. If your home, a nearby power pole or substation is hit by lightning, there will be lots of electricity that needs to go somewhere.
Surge protection stops that energy from running though your wiring and causing damage to your appliances, computers and electronics.
Individual surge protectors versus whole-house surge protectors
Individual surge protectors work by absorbing power surges instead of passing them onto the valuable electronics attached to it. Individual surge protectors normally have a limited capacity, high clamping voltage and slow response time which means a large spike will knock them out.
This information is frequently missing from technical specifications. Even worse many will continue to operate as unprotected powerboards once they have hit capacity, leaving you unprotected.
Whole house surge protectors are installed in your switchboard near the main switch, they have a high diverting capacity, protect everything in your home and come with a clear end of life indicator.
It is best practice to use both whole-house surge protector, earthing stake and individual surge protectors. Using individual surge protectors on your most sensitive electrical equipment will prevent mini surges in your home from fridges and air conditioners from spreading.
Why do you need an earthing stake?
Surge protectors focus on diverting power surges instead of absorbing them. It is highly recommended that you install an earthing stake to make the most of the whole house surge protectors diverting power.
A whole-house surge protector works by redirecting a power surge to earth. If there is insufficient grounding, the metal oxide varistor in the surge protector will take a flogging and burn out.
The surge protector protects your electronics and the earth stake protects the surge protector.

Got a call back quickly which was nice, asked to describe problem. Already did that online. Told to expect plumber at... 9am (which is fine, not the afternoon though), I'm regularly up late so thought I'd sleep until then. Missed "courtesy" calls as phone on silent, they were trying to confirm I'm around. Thus job was delayed til later today. I was already told 9am so yes I am around. Andrew and Adam from Omega Plumbing and Home Services did an excellent job in renewing my Sewerage and complete drainage system of my old home in Winston Hills. Matt and Jarred initially did the investigation and provided very courteous and professional service. A mixed review. Very happy with initial response and quote. Was told two workers would be back to drain and remove old water heater. Ben arrived on his own. He was polite and efficient but it was not fair on him or us as my husband had to help him remove the heater which was... extremely heavy and awkward. The heater would not have been removed if my husband hadn't helped. We did pay for this so shouldn't have had to help. On a brighter note, both William and Jarden arrived to install the new heater. Both were very friendly and efficient and the job was successfully completed. My parents have had a few jobs completed by Omega over the years. They always rave about the staff & the great tradies they have. My husband decided to give them a go recently for a plumbing issue we had. He called, they came out the same day & gave us a price to complete the... repair. The next day a team arrived, on time I will add, & completed the work. My husband arrived home & had a few questions about the work he wasn’t sure about so he called the Omega. Spoke to a lady called Natalie who assured us her Manager would call back the next morning by 10:00. Yeah right, you never get that promised call back. How wrong we were! First Adam arrived promptly and strongly encouraged me to watch him jet the sewer line so I could understand any problems as to why sewerage overflowed outside and my house flooded with bath water. Understandably I was extremely anxious and upset with houseful of guests and... toilets not working properly and the prospect of major work to pipes. Reassured by projects manager who had Stephen and Nick arrived within couple of hours. They were joined by Todd who all had the main area of concrete cut up quickly and left tidy for main pipe replacement the next day. From the moment I called Omega Home Services, Ryan was the first to come out, our water heater was leaking. Of course it has to be replaced. Being the long weekend, Ryan left his number in case water heater broke down further, and Ryan said Omega would put in a temporary water... heater, well the heater broke down that same afternoon a temporary heater was installed.The service was prompt and efficient. We used Omega to inspect our drain due to blockage in the toilet. After the inspection, it was determined that our whole sewer line needed replacing. They started working next day. Nelson from Omega Services came and installed a brand new hot water system for us last week. The water heater delivered the first time was found to be faulty. Nelson and his colleague immediately got in touch with the company and quickly arranged for its replacement. The new one... was delivered right next day. In the meantime, to make sure that we did not have to suffer a 24-hour waiting period without hot water running in the house during winter time, Nelson and his colleague installed us a temporary hot-water system. Then, Nelson returned the next day and installed the new system for us straight away, and also gave us some good tips on how to use and maintain the new system.
