There is an array of different types of lights out there on the market, which can make it hard to differentiate their advantages, disadvantages and how they work. However the main type of lights are:

LED (light emitting diodes)

These are the most cost effective along with energy efficient lights on the market.

Advantages:

  • Most cost effective and energy efficient
  • Will last a long period of time
  • Small in size
  • Dont generate much heat

Disadvantages:

  • The more expensive option
  • Often voltage sensitive
  • Depend mainly on the temperature around them
  • Don’t give spherical light distribution

Incandescent

This is the traditional style and also the most commonly used although not very efficient to run. This globe started to phase out around 2009.

Advantages:

  • The most common light bulb for over 100 years
  • Cheap to purchase
  • Suited best for small areas
  • Made with non-toxic material

Disadvantages:

  • Inefficient to run
  • Won’t last very long
  • Doesn’t cover large areas
  • Mostly phased out

Halogen

Runs similar to the incandescent globe however with halogen gas which makes it more sustainable and energy efficient. These run a lot longer than the incandescent.

Advantages:

  • Cheap to buy
  • More energy and cost efficient than incandescents
  • Compact size
  • Clear crisp light

Disadvantages:

  • Dont last very long
  • Inefficient to run
  • Run hotter than incandescents

CFL (compact fluorescent lamp)

These are the most cost efficient and energy efficient globe. However it is noted that a small amount of mercury is present in the globe.

Advantages:

  • More energy and cost efficient than incandescents and halogens
  • Generate little heat
  • Can work with dimmer

Disadvantages:

  • Temperature sensitive to the cold
  • Won’t last very long
  • Long warm up time
  • Not recommended for enclosed fixtures

There are also different types of lights which are most commonly known as task, general and accent, which work together to light an area. If you are after lighting assistance contact an electrician to have your home fitted with suitable lighting.
